SCIENTIFIC NAME: Hymenaea Courbaril

COMMON NAMES: Jatoba

Jatoba grain is interlocked, texture fine and lustrous. Does darken when exposed to sunlight. May contain gum-like deposits. A hard and durable timber with high bending and crushing strength. Timber is stable after drying and undergoes very little dimensional change in response to atmospheric conditions.

COUNTRIES OF DISTRIBUTION: Argentina, Brasil, Colombia & Venezuela.

ENVIRONMENTAL PROFILE: Vulnerable, rare in parts of its range.

HEARTWOOD COLOUR: Reddish brown, dark brown, purple with dark streaks.

SAPWOOD COLOUR: White to yellowish and well-defined.

WORKING PROPERTIES: Glues, moulds, sands, screws and turns well. Resists splitting but care needs to be taken when planning. Responds well to hand tools. General finishing is good.
